You're Not Building Buy-In. You're Just Convincing People Nicely.
You keep handing your team podcasts, posts, programs. Good ones. The kind that changed how you think.
And you keep waiting for the shift. The initiative. The ownership.
It doesn't come the way you expect.
Here's the belief that was quietly running the show: if I just find them the right resource, they'll get it. Made sense. Felt generous, even. But it was never true. I believed it for years before I saw what it actually was, convincing people, just with better manners. The podcast, the post, the program, those were my wants on the table. Nobody asked what was on theirs.
And here's the thing about humans: we don't resist growth. We resist growth that gets decided for us.
So the belief had to go before the behavior could change. I stopped handing over answers and started handing over choices. Three resources instead of one assignment. "What would actually move you forward?" instead of "here's what will."
Same standard. Same direction. Different hands on the wheel.
The team that shows up now isn't nodding along to my plan. They're defending their own.
If your team isn't stepping up, check the belief before you blame the person. You might be surprised what you find sitting underneath it.
